LabArchives FAQ
-
LabArchives is a cloud-based electronic lab notebook (ELN) platform for securely managing and sharing research data. Rutgers provides two products: LabArchives for Research, for recording and storing scientific data, and LabArchives Inventory, for tracking laboratory samples, reagents, and equipment. All active Rutgers faculty, staff, students, and guests have access to both.
-
All active Rutgers faculty, staff, students, and guests have access to both LabArchives for Research and LabArchives Inventory.
To log in:
- Go to mynotebook.labarchives.com.
- Select Rutgers University from the institution dropdown menu.
- Sign in using Rutgers Single Sign-On (SSO) with your NetID and password.
These same steps apply whether you are accessing LabArchives for the first time or returning as an existing user.
-
Yes. Several training resources are available:
Users may also request training or one-on-one assistance by emailing support@labarchives.com from their Rutgers email account.
For Rutgers-specific questions and support, contact the Rutgers ELN team at eln-help@oarc.rutgers.edu.
-
Access to notebook data is limited to:
- The notebook owner
- Collaborators specifically invited by the owner
Notebook owners control collaborator permissions and determine the level of access granted to each user.
LabArchives does not share data between users without authorization. LabArchives staff may access data only when necessary to provide or support the service and are subject to background checks and confidentiality requirements.
All data remains the property of Rutgers University.
-
Individual files may be uploaded up to 16 GB per file, which accommodates the vast majority of research data. Most researchers will not encounter any overall storage limit during normal use.
If your work regularly involves files larger than 16 GB, contact the Rutgers ELN team at eln-help@oarc.rutgers.edu to discuss available options.
-
LabArchives provides a secure environment for regulated research data, including HIPAA-related data, and all Rutgers data is stored on servers located within the United States.
The platform maintains industry-recognized security certifications, including:
- SOC 2 Type II
- ISO 27001
Data is encrypted both:
- In transit
- At rest
Whether LabArchives is appropriate for a specific dataset depends on the nature of the data and any applicable university, sponsor, or regulatory requirements.
If you plan to store sensitive or regulated data (such as Protected Health Information (PHI)) or have compliance questions, contact the Rutgers Information Security Office compliance team before storing the data. Additional review may be required.
