Rutgers Research Network
This National Science Foundation-(NSF) and university-funded project built a data-driven, frictionless research network, connecting all campuses, to enable productive research and education with next-generation network services. Rutgers has enhanced its previous campus cyberinfrastructure by implementing a friction-free, software defined network (SDN) based connection across and between campuses. This next-generation research network not only allows the building distributed-data repositories and advanced computing across the Rutgers campuses, but also improves the speed and quality of service (QoS) when connecting into the national cyberinfrastructure ecosystem, e.g., XSEDE, Open Science Grid (OSG), CloudLab, and Global Environment for Network Innovations (FABRIC).

NSF and university-funded solution to build a data driven frictionless dedicated research network (NSF Award #1659232, “CICNet – The One-Rutgers Next Generation Data Driven Research Network”).
Connects all Rutgers campuses, enabling productive research education with next generation network services.
Original funding coupled each campus at 40+ Gb/s backbone and field upgradeable to 100Gb/s. In 2026, OARC and EI are partnering to further improve the network by maintaining the inter-campus circuits at 100Gbps while upgrading intra-campus dark fiber links to 400Gbps to support AI workloads.

DMPTool
Rutgers is a participating institution in the data management plan (DMP) application called DMPTool. It is a free, open-source application recommended by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other large funding agencies that require such plans be included in funding proposals.
DMPTool includes general guidance to assist you with:
- Creating ready-to-use data-management plans for specific agencies
- Meeting funder requirements for data-management plans
- Step-by-step instructions and guidance when building your data-management plan
- Resources and services available at Rutgers to help fulfill the data management requirements of your grant

Ecosystem for Research Networking (ERN)
The Ecosystem for Research Networking is a consortium of universities, network providers, and industry partners working to simplify multi-campus collaborations and partnerships that advance the frontiers of research, education, and innovation.
Rutgers is leading this partnership to provide layered and transparent access to shared data and computing facilities for research projects located at and between partner sites. The resulting regional research and education platform will support a diverse set of science drivers and emergent educational opportunities. It will offer the educational research community access to a broad range of collaborative multi-institutional resources that are not available on any one campus alone.

These include Open Science Grid (OSG), ACCESS, Internet2, National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR), and others. OARC’s systems are also capable of enabling bursting of submitted jobs into commercial and academic cloud services when local resources are heavily utilized or other factors favor external resources.
