Amarel Protected Environment (PE)

Amarel PE is a high-performance research computing and analytics system that is part of the Clinical and Research Data Warehouse (CRDW). Designed for research and education projects that require access to and working with sensitive and/or controlled data, it has been certified as the University’s only NIST 800-171 compliant research computing cluster. Rutgers researchers who require analytical access to controlled data must utilize Amarel PE within the CRDW.

Increased demand from the clinical research community for a protected environment to perform analytics on data that includes PHI and recently revised regulations from government funding agencies, particularly National Institutes of Health (NIH), spurred a push to consolidate all health data core services into the CRDW and provide a secure environment for working with such data.

Statement from Rutgers’ Chief Information Officer

As a direct outcome of the partnership between Rutgers Health and RWJBarnabas, this has truly been a collaborative effort involving many individuals from across our organizations. Very specifically, we recognize the innovation, effort, creativity, and leadership invested by the team at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) in developing the first-generation multimodal clinical and research data warehouse, automated ETL (extract, transform, load) interface, and mining tools that became the foundation for the enterprise-level CRDW environment. Because of the efforts by all involved, the CRDW is expected to become an invaluable resource to our academic healthcare enterprise.
