Digital Accessibility

Accessibility Matters

At Rutgers, digital accessibility means every student, faculty, and staff member can use our websites, course materials, and online tools without barriers — and it’s a responsibility we all share.

Why accessibility matters

In April 2024, the Department of Justice (DOJ) updated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), establishing new digital accessibility requirements for public colleges and universities. Under these regulations, Rutgers University must ensure that websites, applications, and digital content meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards.

Meeting this standard depends on all of us at Rutgers, from web content creators to developers. This page will help you find the training and tools you need to do your part.

Track your progress with Deque

Rutgers is committed to meeting the DOJ’s compliance deadline. All departments should report on progress in two areas: (1) number of accessibility trainings completed, and (2) accessibility score for website content, excluding course materials. Email accessibility@rutgers.edu if you have any questions.

Learning paths

We recommend that any member of a Rutgers department who creates or manages content for their websites take at least one training through Deque University.

We set up four learning paths in Deque University, which correspond to various roles an employee may have – document accessibility, web accessibility, web developers, and customer service. You can use this form to enroll in a specific learning path, and/or set up a group in Deque for your department to track your training progress over time.
