Word accessibility training

Oct. 5: 1 – 2 p.m.

Learn how to make your Word documents accessible by designing your content with intent during this Office of IT Accessibility training. Learn how users with disabilities navigate and interact with Word documents, and tackle common issues such as a lack of heading structure, color contrast problems, images without alt text, and more.

Avoiding AI

Oct. 9: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Learn how to avoid Generative AI. This Rutgers Libraries session will focus on how to disable AI features in popular platforms and apps. It will introduce participants to the ethical concerns that motivate AI skeptics to avoid the intentional use of Generative AI.

Data visualization for decision makers

Oct. 13: 4 – 6 p.m.

Learn how to communicate insights effectively, with the goal of outputting polished visualizations and an annotated chart, during this Rutgers Libraries workshop. The workshop will cover principles of effective visualization, improving poor charts, and adding narrative and context. Attendees will develop polished visualizations and an annotated chart with insights.

The Environmental Impact of AI

Oct. 14: 3 – 4 p.m.

Join the Rutgers Libraries to explore the environmental impact of generative AI, from the electricity and water that data centers consume to the pressure they put on power grids and the communities where they are built. We will examine what the current evidence shows about the scale of that impact. You’ll also learn how your own choices as a user, what you use AI for and how, factor into that picture.

Data visualization 1

Oct. 20: 2 – 3:30 p.m.

This Rutgers Libraries workshop covers basic data visualization in R, with emphasis on ggplot2 and associated packages. The focus here is on R techniques, with a brief comparison to Python techniques for accomplishing similar tasks, such as seaborn and matplotlib. PowerPoint accessibility training

Oct. 22: 11 a.m. – noon

Learn how to make your PowerPoint presentations easier for everyone to use and understand during this Office of IT Accessibility-hosted training. This training covers simple tips for adding alt text, choosing accessible colors, setting the slide reading order, and using PowerPoint’s built-in accessibility tools.

Digital privacy: protecting yourself and educating others

Oct. 30: 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

This Rutgers Libraries workshop will introduce you to tools and techniques for protecting your digital privacy and how to share this information with others.

  • A guide to the ethical implications of generative AI

    Nov. 3: 3 – 4 p.m.

    Generative AI has moved faster than our collective understanding of its consequences, from data privacy to environmental cost to how it shapes the way we think and learn. This Rutgers Libraries discussion will delve into the critical, ethical, and societal considerations of AI. We will examine how biases in training data can lead to discriminatory outcomes, and you’ll learn about the significant environmental consequences of large-scale AI development.

    Adobe Education Institute: empowered workflows with AI in Adobe Acrobat

    Nov. 3: 11 a.m. – noon; 1-2 p.m.; 3-4 p.m.

    The Adobe Education Institute offers higher education faculty and staff three hands-on virtual workshops covering AI integration within Adobe Acrobat. Those who register for this pathway can also receive a recording if they are unable to make each session.

    Evaluating AI output: How to discern accuracy, reasoning, and framing

    Nov. 10: 3 – 4 p.m.

    Generative AI tools produce output that sounds confident and well-reasoned — but sounding right and being right are not the same thing. This Rutgers Libraries workshop introduces Discernment, one of four core competencies in the AI Fluency Framework, as a structured way to evaluate AI-generated content across three dimensions: factual accuracy, quality of reasoning, and framing.

    Managing references in the age of AI: promises and pitfalls

    Nov. 12: noon – 1 p.m.

    AI is changing how researchers read, organize, and cite scholarly literature. This Rutgers Libraries workshop explores how AI can support reference management, from interacting with PDF articles and generating summaries to organizing sources and creating citations.

    Adobe Student Academy: create a portfolio that stands out

    Nov. 16: 1 — 1:45 p.m.

    Students can learn how to build a professional portfolio websites using Adobe Express during this Adobe Student Academy workshop.

    Adobe Student Academy: build your professional brand

    Nov. 16: 3 — 3:45 p.m.

    Student will learn how to create a cohesive personal brand using LinkedIn Banners, branding graphics, and networking materials to tell their stories during this Adobe-hosted workshop.

    Adobe Student Academy: craft videos for school and student organizations

    Nov. 17 1 — 1:45 p.m.

    During this hands-on, Adobe-hosted session, students will learn to create short promotional videos for clubs, events or personal projects using Adobe Express.

    Adobe Student Academy: turn notes into study guides

    Nov. 17 3 — 3:45 p.m.

    Students will learn how to turn class notes and study materials into visual study guides to help them review faster and retain more material during this hands-on, Adobe-hosted session.

    PDF accessibility training

    Nov. 18: 1 — 2 p.m.

    PDFs are widely recognized and used around the world and are often considered a standard format for electronic documents. PDFs are also very rigid, which can make them tricky to navigate for users with disabilities. Learn about common problems with inaccessible PDFs, how to fix them, and the finer points of making PDFs accessible with the Office of IT Accessibility during this one-hour training.

    Incorporating AI in research, literature review and classroom assignments

    Nov. 20: 2 – 3 p.m.

    In this Rutgers Libraries workshop, college students will be introduced to the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT and Gemini in research and literature review. Participants will learn how to effectively harness AI tools and learn about different AI applications that can be used in conjunction with library databases.
