Microsoft Teams phone allows you to make and receive external calls on your desktop, laptop, or Rutgers-compliant mobile device using the Microsoft Teams app.
What does that mean?
If you already have a Rutgers phone number, you can have it moved to Microsoft Teams. You can also request a new Rutgers phone number that will be associated to Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft Teams phone is available to new and existing Rutgers employees.
How do I access Microsoft Teams phone?
Microsoft Teams phone requires a billable phone number and a Microsoft Teams phone license.
Considering migrating to Microsoft Teams phone?
Use the criteria below to determine whether Microsoft Teams phone meets your needs.
Consider Microsoft Teams phone if…
- You are looking to replace your physical desk phone but still require a Rutgers phone number.
- You need an individual voicemail box associated with your number (not a group or shared voicemail service).
- You prefer to use your computer (desktop or laptop) as your primary device for making and receiving professional phone calls.
- You already use Microsoft Teams regularly for collaboration and want to consolidate your communications into a single application.
Microsoft Teams phone is not for you if…
- You require multiple phone lines or a shared departmental line associated with your extension.
- Your number is part of an Auto-Attendant system, such as Caller Menus, Name Dialing, or a directory with Menu Choices (e.g., Press 1 for X, Press 2 for Y).
- You need specialized telephony features like Intercoms, Paging, Hunt Groups, or Broadcast services.
- Your primary function is to handle Contact Center or Call Queue traffic.
Important migration details:
If you choose to move to Microsoft Teams phone, please be aware of the following changes to your existing phone services:
- Voicemail Data Loss: Any existing voicemails stored on the Cisco platform (Cisco Unity) cannot be migrated to the Teams platform. Please save or delete your messages before the switch.
- Deskphone Functionality Change: Your current physical deskphone will be reprogrammed. It will only retain the ability to call 911 for emergency services; all other calling features will be disabled.
- Webex Phone Service: Your associated Webex phone services (calling features within the Webex App) will be disabled and removed.
- Platform Removal: Upon migration, your account and phone services will be permanently deleted from the Cisco telephony platform.
