Avoiding AI
Oct. 9: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Learn how to avoid Generative AI. This Rutgers Libraries session will focus on how to disable AI features in popular platforms and apps. It will introduce participants to the ethical concerns that motivate AI skeptics to avoid the intentional use of Generative AI.
The Environmental Impact of AI
Oct. 14: 3 – 4 p.m.
Join the Rutgers Libraries to explore the environmental impact of generative AI, from the electricity and water that data centers consume to the pressure they put on power grids and the communities where they are built. We will examine what the current evidence shows about the scale of that impact. You’ll also learn how your own choices as a user, what you use AI for and how, factor into that picture.

A guide to the ethical implications of generative AI
Nov. 3: 3 – 4 p.m.
Generative AI has moved faster than our collective understanding of its consequences, from data privacy to environmental cost to how it shapes the way we think and learn. This Rutgers Libraries discussion will delve into the critical, ethical, and societal considerations of AI. We will examine how biases in training data can lead to discriminatory outcomes, and you’ll learn about the significant environmental consequences of large-scale AI development.
Evaluating AI output: How to discern accuracy, reasoning, and framing
Nov. 10: 3 – 4 p.m.
Generative AI tools produce output that sounds confident and well-reasoned — but sounding right and being right are not the same thing. This Rutgers Libraries workshop introduces Discernment, one of four core competencies in the AI Fluency Framework, as a structured way to evaluate AI-generated content across three dimensions: factual accuracy, quality of reasoning, and framing.
Managing references in the age of AI: promises and pitfalls
Nov. 12: noon – 1 p.m.
AI is changing how researchers read, organize, and cite scholarly literature. This Rutgers Libraries workshop explores how AI can support reference management, from interacting with PDF articles and generating summaries to organizing sources and creating citations.
Incorporating AI in research, literature review and classroom assignments
Nov. 20: 2 – 3 p.m.
In this Rutgers Libraries workshop, college students will be introduced to the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT and Gemini in research and literature review. Participants will learn how to effectively harness AI tools and learn about different AI applications that can be used in conjunction with library databases.
