Using tags on the Rutgers IT website

Tags are an internal resource for content on the Rutgers IT website. Tags can be applied to services and newsroom stories. Tags are not used for SEO.

Services

Tags for services are used for search purposes on the Rutgers IT website. Tags can be applied more freely for services as compared to newsroom stories because of their use in search. When services are added to the services listing, their descriptions, which are intentionally brief, do not always include terms that people would search. For example, adding the tag “Photoshop” to the Adobe Software Discount Program service would allow that search term to provide that search result despite “Photoshop” not appearing in the Adobe Software Discount Program description.

Newsroom

Tags on newsroom stories allow the stories to be displayed on the subsite pages they are tagged. For example, a story tagged “Rutgers Connect” would appear in the news section of it.rutgers.edu/rutgers-connect.

Here are things to keep in mind when using tags for Newsroom stories:

• Suggest a minimal number of tags
• Include suggested tags in the draft of newsroom stories
• Tags are shared throughout the core site, including for uses in services. Do not assume a tag is currently in use in other Newsroom stories if it appears to autofill
• You can view tags used in other newsroom stories under the “Posts” tab of the “IT Sites” dashboard
