Notification
A number of recent phishing attacks appear designed to target New Jersey state employees by impersonating financial companies and aiming to steal bank credentials.
The emails may appear legitimate, and even contain links to the financial companies’ websites, but then direct employees to a fraudulent website to enter bank account details. In some instances, the emails may pose as a security alert or indicate your account will be suspended unless you verify your information.
Don’t be fooled by phishing scams
To prevent falling for a phishing scam, do the following:
- Do not click links in unexpected emails from unverified senders.
- Hover over any links in emails with your mouse to see if you are being redirected outside of the expected domain (such as rutgers.edu or yourbank.com). Mobile device users may be able to preview links by clicking and holding on links.
- If the link goes to an unfamiliar domain, do not click on the link, especially if you have not verified the source of the email.
- Navigate directly to official websites to log in to your account and verify any requests to provide information or resolve issues.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your banking institution.
