Completed
The on-premise email servers were successfully upgraded this morning. This planned maintenance has been completed.
Scheduled
The following message is intended for Rutgers information technology staff members. No impact on end users is expected.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) on-premise email servers will be upgraded the morning of Thursday, March 19, 2020.
Planned server and capacity upgrades
OIT will be upgrading Rutgers on-premise email servers responsible for “alias” email forwarding. These upgrades include software enhancements, refreshed hardware, and a modernization of the network infrastructure.
The email servers require these upgrades to ensure their continuity, reliability, and ongoing availability for University business, as well as to prepare for future enhancements to OIT email services.
How you may be affected
These servers handle “alias” email forwarding for over 100 email domains, including “@rutgers.edu” alias forwarding. OIT does not anticipate downtime as a result of this maintenance. University business email destined to OIT email systems (e.g. Rutgers Connect, ScarletMail, etc.) is expected to migrate transparently. However, there is a possibility of delays for parties using third-party email services, such as some alumni.
Delivery timing to other providers will be addressed but, ultimately, is a decision made by each external provider. Please send any questions to help@oit.rutgers.edu.
Additional technical details
Although work will begin on the morning of March 19, technical standards dictate that existing email may continue in transit for up to five days. During this time, email may transit either the old or new servers.
The following forwarding alias email domains may be impacted by this work.

Additionally, the involved mail servers and outbound forwarded email will change to new IP addresses. OIT will be coordinating required DNS changes with the Rutgers Hostmaster. If you do not receive DNS service from Rutgers, OIT will handle your transition at a later date. Please contact OIT if you believe these changes will impact your environment.
