Wi-Fi at Rutgers is moving to eduroam
The following email message was sent to Rutgers students, faculty, and staff on September 22, 2026.
Dear Members of the Rutgers Community:
Rutgers will be transitioning this fall from RUWireless Secure to eduroam as the university’s wireless network—a move to enhance security, simplify the wireless experience, and avoid disruptions related to underlying technical changes.
Starting September 29, eduroam—a global Wi-Fi service used by thousands of institutions—will become the primary wireless network at Rutgers.
As of that day, all new devices connecting to Wi-Fi at Rutgers will need to use eduroam.
Existing devices that currently connect to RUWireless Secure will need to switch to eduroam this fall. RUWireless Secure will remain available during the transition, but the network will be turned off on January 5, 2027.
What is eduroam?
The eduroam service is a secure Wi-Fi network for the global higher education and research community. Many other universities, including Rutgers’ Big Ten peers, already use eduroam as their Wi-Fi network.
What are eduroam’s benefits?
Once you set up eduroam at Rutgers, your device can easily connect at participating universities and research institutions when you travel, making it simple to stay connected for conferences, research, collaboration, or study. The service provides the same wireless connectivity you’re accustomed to, while offering the convenience of a service used across higher education.
Why is Rutgers making the change?
The transition is part of a broader effort to update the digital certificate infrastructure used at Rutgers. Moving to eduroam will help Rutgers avoid potential disruptions related to changes in that infrastructure while adopting a wireless service already widely used across higher education.
What do I need to do?
Starting September 29, the Office of Information Technology will provide instructions and other resources to help you connect new devices to the network and move existing devices to eduroam.
Will the RUHealthSciences network be affected?
This network will continue to operate without any changes for now.
Will RUWireless Secure be available in the fall?
Yes, RUWireless Secure will be available until it is decommissioned on January 5, 2027. Over the course of the fall, you will be encouraged to move to eduroam to avoid a disruption of service in early 2027.
Where should I go for help with the eduroam transition?
IT staff throughout the university are already learning about the transition and will be available for support. For questions, please contact your department’s IT staff or your local Office of Information Technology Help Desk.
