Fall into the semester with back-to-school tech tips

At Rutgers, there are so many great tech resources available for faculty, staff, and students – so ensuring that you’re in the know is key to a smooth back-to-school start.

As the semester gets into full swing, don’t let tech slip your mind! This back-to-school tech checklist can help you fall into this semester and help make it a great one:

Connect to RUWireless Secure.
One of the first things you’re going to want to do once you arrive on campus is connect your devices to RUWireless Secure. Rutgers’ secure wireless network is available across all campuses and is your go-to for internet connection. Not sure how to connect or having trouble? Visit the RUWireless Secure knowledge base article to learn more.

Students, if you’re living in a Rutgers residence hall, you can also connect smart devices such as gaming consoles, streaming devices, and TVs to the Rutgers Residential Network (ResNet) for high-speed Ethernet connection.

Understand the Rutgers tech assets available to you.
As a member of the Rutgers community, resources such as computer labs, printing services, and more are available with just a click of a button. Knowing and regularly using the IT services and software you have access to is a game-changer.

Need help installing Microsoft Office or creating a Zoom account? Running into a technical issue or error message? The Rutgers IT Help Portal can be the first place you go. This self-service portal includes how-to articles, frequently asked questions, and direct contact with the Office of Information Technology Help Desk.

Download top Rutgers software programs and keep them up to date.
The university offers a variety of software applications for the Rutgers community including Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, LinkedIn Learning, Zoom, and more to download through the University Software Portal.

Make sure to stay ahead of the curve and once you have these software programs downloaded, keep up to date with the latest versions to ensure a smooth user experience. No one likes being late to a Zoom meeting because of a software update!

Create a strong password for your Rutgers services.
Your password at Rutgers is the only barrier between the internet and your personal information – so it’s important to have a strong one. A good password should be anywhere between 10-63 characters long, use special characters, and have a mix of upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and punctuation.

Practice cybersecurity safety.
With phishing scams, hackers, and other cyber threats roaming every corner of the internet, taking cybersecurity seriously is more important than ever. Make sure you’re aware of your presence online and the threats that exist in order to protect yourself and the Rutgers community.

The Information Security Office provides various resources related to cybersecurity that students, faculty, and staff can utilize to enhance their online awareness.
