In lieu of the in-person Rutgers IT Day event that was planned for October 2020, a plan was developed to host a web conference event series that would bring all Rutgers IT professionals together in a virtual setting to connect, learn, and share with one another. With Rutgers’ advancement of remote technologies, there was an opportunity to move to something online and start the series earlier.

The Rutgers IT Lecture Series, hosted by the Rutgers IT engagement committee, will occur a few times this year and feature guest presenters who will discuss a variety of important IT topics at Rutgers. Collaboration and feedback from our IT community will continue to reinvent the upcoming events. We highly encourage Rutgers IT staff members to attend and participate in these events.

The purpose is to continue the mission of “one IT” and host a web conference event series that brings all Rutgers IT professionals together to connect, learn, and share with one another. Now, more than ever, is a good time to share information about what Rutgers IT has to offer, including new tools and technologies for remote work.

The first event, “Collaboration Done Right: Leveraging Office365 and Microsoft Teams” was held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Michele Norin kicked off the event with a keynote speech to attendees. Then, Vladimir Gabrielescu, associate director in the Messaging and Collaboration Services group of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), presented the capabilities, features, management and use cases of Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is a tool that OIT offers all members of the University. A recording of this event is available.

The Rutgers IT Day steering committee, which is made up of a group of Rutgers IT staff across various departments, schools, and units, were working together for over two years to plan an event for all Rutgers IT professionals. Rutgers IT Day aimed to bring all Rutgers IT professionals together to showcase IT initiatives and strategic partnerships that benefit the entire Rutgers community. This planned event would have included presentations from IT professionals, educational sessions with peers and industry experts, a chance to connect with technology vendors, giveaways, and other networking and professional development opportunities. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, having an in-person event in October 2020 was no longer an option.

The committee continued to discuss other options and renamed themselves the Rutgers IT engagement committee. The new goal of this committee was to refocus their efforts from an in-person event to an event in a virtual setting. It was important to continue the mission of “one IT” and host a different type of event – a web conference event series – with the same goal of bringing all Rutgers IT professionals together to connect, learn, and share with one another.

With Rutgers’ advancement of remote technologies, there was an opportunity to move to something online and start the series earlier. The committee’s goal was to get something out quickly, as now, more than ever, is a good time to share information about what Rutgers IT has to offer, including new tools and technologies for remote work. These web conference events are now known as the Rutgers IT Lecture Series and there will be a few events throughout the year.
