Computer recommendations for Rutgers students
kite+key, Rutgers Tech Store
Systems meeting the recommendations outlined on this page can be found at the Rutgers kite+key Tech Store. Note that all students will need access to a computer for coursework and other Rutgers resources.
Check with your school
Students should check with their school or department for any discipline-specific technology requirements. In some cases, there is no need to purchase equipment because it is provided by the school.

Additional guidance and recommendations
Laptops recommended
While desktop systems have the necessary capabilities, a laptop is recommended as a student’s primary computer. Chromebooks and tablets are not recommended as a primary computer unless specifically endorsed or provided by your school or department.
Tablets and Chromebooks
The ease of use and portability of Chromebooks and tablets, such as the iPad, make them an attractive option for students. Though not recommended as a primary computer, they can be beneficial to supplement a student’s educational experience.
Consider a warranty upgrade
Standard warranties typically provide one year of coverage and require the device to be returned for repair. Consider upgrading for on-site service, accidental damage protection, and a term covering the time to your degree.
Software for students
Virtual computer lab
Get remote access to computer lab software, whenever you want it, by using the virtual computer lab.
University Software Portal
