Automated Resources
These items below are tools that individuals with disabilities can use, should they run into inaccessible content. They are not meant to be used in place of providing fully accessible content.
Auto captions for videos/audio with out captions:
The following are options for any audio or videos that do not have captions. These tools will provide automated captions which may not be 100% accurate.
- Google Live Caption | Google Chrome – Free Built into google chrome and chrome books, you can have any video automatically display captions. See googles instructions on how to turn on live caption.
- Live Transcribe | Android – Free Built into all android devices, this allows you to instantly get captions on any video, or audio coming into the microphone. This can is a great way of getting instant auto-captions for real-time conversations
- iOS Live Captions | Iphones/iOS devices – Free With this you can get real time auto-captioning of spoken text, as well as any video displayed on your phone.
- MacOS Live Captions | MacOS devices- Free Provides real-time auto captions for any audio in any app including facetime, zoom, or videos played in your browser.
- Windows Live Captions | Windows – Free Provides real-time auto captioning for any video played on your windows device.
Image descriptions for Images with out alt-text:
JAWS
JAWS (Job Access with Speech) Picture Smart AI feature: With in JAWS you can utilize their AI to describe any photo, graph, or image. To do this:
Press Insert + Space Bar, then P
From here you have several options, press the following key to perform that function:
- F- describe the file in file explorer
- C- Describe the image at the current focus
- S- Describe the entire screen
- W- Describe the active window
VoiceOver (MacOS and iOS)
In VoiceOver go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver Recognition> Image Descriptions (you may also want to turn on Text Recognition).
When you encounter an image VoiceOver will use AI to provide an image description if it is not already available.
Optical Character Recognition for text not properly formatted:
JAWS
JAWS can OCR scanned images, PDFS, or any screen that is not reading as text. To do this with in JAWS:
Press Insert+ Space Bar
From there you have a few options, press the following keys to perform the following function:
- O, D – OCR the document
- O, F – OCR the file
- O, W – OCR the current window
- O,S – OCR the entire screen
In most cases you’ll use O,D if you are reading an inaccessible document, or O,W if you are on a webpage that isn’t fully accessible.
VoiceOver (MacOS and iOS)
VoiceOver can detect text in both MacOS and iOS devices. To do so:
Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > VoiceOver Recognition > Text Recognition
When ever you encounter text with in an image it will detect that text and read it as text.
