The following email message was sent to Rutgers IT faculty and staff on February 24, 2026.
Colleagues,
We are writing to share important information regarding ongoing pricing and availability changes for computing hardware at Rutgers. Due to unprecedented demand from AI and data center markets, computer vendors such as Dell are experiencing significant pricing volatility, cost increases, and extended lead times.
These conditions are expected to continue for the next 18 months or longer and will require more deliberate planning around procurement, budgeting, vendor selection, and configuration decisions.
What does this mean?
Dell specifically has already begun increasing prices and extending delivery timelines, and some of these pricing changes may vary day by day. It is unclear when pricing will stabilize or when supply chain conditions will improve. As a result, we may not be able to provide predictable pricing through the Rutgers Computer Standards program until markets normalize.
What if I need to request a special configuration from Dell?
All non-standard configurations for Dell, including upgrades to existing standards, must be submitted to dell.rutgers@dell.com for quoting due to current pricing and inventory volatility. For the fastest turnaround, we recommend generating an eQuote through Dell Premier using these instructions.
Can I upgrade my device after delivery?
Some Dell devices allow for upgrades after delivery; however, vendors do not warranty third-party components and may require their removal prior to warranty service. Please verify upgrade eligibility before placing an order.
Does this affect other computing hardware vendors?
We are continuing to have discussions with Apple, Microsoft, HP, and Lenovo. For the most current pricing and availability for these products, please visit the kite+key website.
What about RUWare purchases?
Although pricing volatility will affect all Rutgers customers, Rutgers University–Newark and Rutgers Health units should continue to work through RUWare for ordering and pricing information.
We will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as vendor guidance evolves. If you have any questions, please email RUWare@oit.rutgers.edu.
Thank you,
Brian Luper
