Avoid cyber scares with security awareness events

It’s here – October marks the 22nd annual Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a joint effort between the government and others to increase cybersecurity awareness and knowledge. Join the Rutgers Information Security Office at the following in-person and virtual events throughout the month.

Come play with us, Rutgers
Help Rutgers bring home a win during the Big Ten Academic Alliance’s (BTAA) cyber awareness competition at 1:30 p.m. on October 1. This game show-style event is meant to test participants’ online safety skills in a fast, friendly, school-against-school competition. You’ll need to register for the event with your Rutgers email address and insert “Rutgers University” as your organization in order to participate.

CISO panel addresses security in higher ed
Rutgers Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Guy J. Albertini joins other CISOs from the University of Oregon, University of Michigan, and Michigan State University at this BTAA-hosted online event to discuss the security challenges higher education institutions encounter. Join us at 2 p.m. on October 9. The event requires an email or a Zoom account, so use your chosen Rutgers account to register.

Catch-up with Women+ in IT
The BTAA Women+ in IT’s monthly coffee catch-up, at 11:30 a.m. on October 15, takes a cybersecurity twist that’s facilitated by Catharine Tarquinio, information security awareness and training analyst for the Office of Information Technology’s Information Security Office. Discussion topics include personal cyber safety and recognizing and protecting your own digital footprint. Register for the event using your Rutgers email address and list “Rutgers University” as your organization.

Do you like scary cyber stories?
Gather ‘round the virtual campfire at this BTAA event to hear spine-tingling tales of online dangers at 2 p.m. on October 22. Based on real-world stories about online scams, cyber-attacks, and data breaches, this virtual event covers the most common online threats and provides practical tips for protecting yourself and your data. The event requires an email or a Zoom account for registration, so use your chosen Rutgers account to register for the event.

Thwart cyber criminals by being politely paranoid
Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security and an ethical hacker, will present a virtual keynote at noon on October 29. The address breaks down recent cyberattacks, defenses against the latest hacking methods, including AI-assisted attacks, and includes live hacking demonstrations.
