Annual Review 2023-2024
The power of a resilient network and keeping our data secure
Rutgers Next-Gen Network = speed and resilience
The university is continuing its engagement in a multi-year effort, across Rutgers locations, to develop a faster, more resilient Rutgers network. It’s a big effort, and one that’s key to supporting next-generation innovations in teaching, learning, and research.
Upgraded Wi-Fi in all residence halls, enhancing speed, coverage, and capacity across all campuses. 73 buildings have been completed to date.
Over 450 network switches slated for replacement to provide onboard power. These will eliminate extra power adapters on campus.
Installation of 295 emergency blue light phones completed in December 2023.
All wireless access points at the university are being replaced with new devices that will bring considerably faster Wi-Fi, with greater coverage and capacity.
Data centers at Rutgers: Safeguarding assets and hosting critical services for the university
Rutgers faculty, students and staff produce enough data to occupy
7 geographically distributed data centers
that run 24/7, all to ensure that the university’s valuable intellectual property is on-hand when community members need it.
Cybersecurity matters
Educating the Rutgers community
Staying secure is everyone’s responsibility, and this means training and education for the Rutgers community. Compliance training for the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) concluded with 90% and 84% completion rates, respectively. Meanwhile, a pilot program for cybersecurity awareness training and phishing simulations offered training and gathered feedback from over 2,000 Rutgers employees. Security training is now offered to any Rutgers department, staff, or faculty member who requests it. Learn more about compliance and training.
Your hub for information security services and info
The Information Security website is a one-stop shop for information about IT security policy, staff compliance training, risk management, and risk assessments. Additional details are constantly being added as services expand.
Spreading the word on Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Cybersecurity education happens year-round, but it really kicks into gear for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. At Rutgers, we spread the word with infographics, social posts, videos, and lots more.

Virtual infrastructure provides tangible benefits
Faster provisioning and reductions in hardware and power consumption are just a few advantages of using virtual infrastructure from the Office of Information Technology (OIT), rather than purchasing and managing your own. The benefits of OIT’s server systems include:
- scale securely
- load-balancing
- backup and restore capabilities
- network monitoring and security
- savings from economies of scale and reduced power consumption
