On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support and security updates for the Windows 10 operating system, which means university devices with outdated Windows 10 software will no longer receive:
- security updates or bug fixes.
- technical support from Microsoft.
- new Windows features.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) strongly recommends that all eligible, affected University-owned and managed devices be upgraded to Windows 11 before October 14.
OIT is assisting Rutgers departments with this transition and offering additional guidance and resources.
Why is this important?
Transitioning from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is essential for the safety and functionality of university devices. Devices still running Windows 10 after October 14 will be operational, but without protection, which can expose those devices to cybersecurity risks.
What do departments need to do before October 14?
OIT recommends that all departments upgrade or replace devices by October 14, where possible. With that said, university-owned devices that cannot be upgraded in time will be eligible for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) at no cost in the fall. ESU allows Windows 10 PCs to receive critical and/or important security updates when a department needs additional time to move to Windows 11.
