Three-digit code coming to Duo on October 7

The following email announcement was sent to Rutgers students, faculty, and staff on Sept. 22, 2025.

To strengthen cybersecurity at Rutgers, the university is updating how the Duo Mobile app is used to log in to university systems, starting on October 7.

Instead of tapping the green “Approve” button in the Duo app, you will now be asked to enter a three-digit code that appears in your web browser. This extra step, called Verified Duo Push, helps prevent cybercriminals from tricking people into approving fraudulent login attempts.

You will still use the same Duo Mobile app—no new download is required. The app will also show the time and location of the login attempt so you can confirm it’s really you.

Where you’ll see this change
Most Rutgers systems that use a web-based login, including Canvas, myRutgers, Rutgers Connect, ScarletMail, Zoom, and many others, will require the three-digit code starting October 7. Note that if you selected “Yes, this is my device” during a recent login, you may not need to use Verified Duo Push right away.
