Tableau FAQ
What is Tableau?
Tableau is a robust data visualization software. At Rutgers, the OIT Analytics Reporting team supports an enterprise Tableau instance that can be leveraged for developing and distributing enterprise business intelligence reports and dashboards.
Can I request a new Tableau report or dashboard from the OIT Analytics Reporting team?
The OIT Analytics Reporting team can develop managed reports in Tableau. Managed reports must utilize data from the enterprise Data Warehouse and serve more than one business unit within the organization. If you meet these requirements, please submit a Data Service Request (DSR) with the specific details of your request. An OIT Analytics Reporting team member will then reach out to schedule a review session.
Do I need to purchase a software license to use Tableau?
No. A software license is not needed to access existing reports and dashboards on the enterprise Tableau instance.
When do I need to purchase a Tableau software license?
A software license is required to develop self-service Tableau reports with data that is not stored in the enterprise Data Warehouse. Tableau licenses can be purchased with a higher education discount using your department’s standard procurement process.
For data that is stored in the enterprise Data Warehouse, the data owner must grant a developer access to the data which is then published in a Tableau data source. With this access, the developer may use the enterprise Tableau server to create and publish self-service reports and dashboards.
How do I start publishing reports and dashboards to the enterprise Tableau server?
Reach out to the OIT Analytics Reporting team to get started with the required documentation which includes details such as the project name, business purpose, business owner, data sources, and user NetIDs. Keep in mind that a software license is required to develop self-service Tableau reports with data that is not stored in the enterprise data warehouse.
What Tableau resources are available for students and faculty?
Tableau for teaching is a free resource available to students and faculty.
How do I get access to existing Tableau reports and dashboards?
If a report or dashboard is listed in the Rutgers Reporting Hub, click the “more info” button to navigate to the information page. You may submit a request for access using the “request access” button.
If a report or dashboard is not listed in the Rutgers Reporting Hub, the data owner for that report report must submit a data management request indicating the user’s NetID, name, Tableau environment, and approved Tableau user groups for provisioning.
