Setting up Thunderbird for ScarletMail


Before attempting to configure Thunderbird for ScarletMail, be sure you have activated your ScarletMail account.  

You'll need to first enable IMAP on your ScarletMail account. 

  1. Go to Gmail and login with your ScarletMail email formatted as netid@scarletmail.rutgers.edu
  2. Once logged in, in the top right, click the Settings (gear icon) then select See all settings.
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In the "IMAP access" section, select Enable IMAP.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Once IMAP is enabled you can begin to configure Outlook.

  1. Open Up Thunderbird. Select Local Folders and under Set Up Another Account click on Email.
  2. Fill out required information using guidelines below:
    • Your Name: Enter your first and last name as it should appear in the From line of an email message
    • Email Address: Enter your ScarletMail email address formatted as netid@scarletmail.rutgers.edu
    • Password: Leave blank
    • Remember password: This is checked off by default. If you do not want Thunderbird to remember your password you can uncheck this box. If the box is unchecked you will be asked to enter your password whenever you check your email.
  3. Click Continue and Thunderbird will look up the configuration for your ScarletMail account.
  4. Select the IMAP option. 
  5. Click Done.
  6. You'll be prompted in a separate window to login with your NetID and NetID password
  7. After logging in, click Finish in Thunderbird.
