Using RAMS to send and receive messages

Submitting a Message to a List

When submitting a message to a RAMS list, use the address in the form of listname@rams.rutgers.edu, (where listname is the actual list name). Anyone wishing to submit a message to the list simply sends an e-mail message to the address.

How the message is processed depends upon the list type:

Closed List

When a message is sent to a closed RAMS list, the message sender's e-mail address is checked against the RAMS list's members. If the sender is a member of the RAMS list, the message will be forwarded to all list members.

If the sender of the message is not a member of the RAMS list, the message will not be forwarded to the list and the sender will get a rejection notice informing them that they are not authorized to post to that list.

NOTE: A message sent by someone who is subscribed to a closed list under one address but who replies from another address will be rejected. People who forward their mail to another account may be affected by this.

Moderated List

Many lists are moderated. When a message is sent to a moderated RAMS list, a notification is first sent to the moderators of that list.

If it is approved by a moderator, the message will be forwarded to everyone on the list. If it is rejected, the sender will get a rejection notice. If no action is taken, the message will remain in the moderation queue for the list until it is either approved, rejected, or deleted.

Admin Only

With this type of list, if the sender of the message is not an Owner, Moderator, or Editor of the RAMS list, they will get an error message.

Mail from Owners, Moderators, and Editors is held until approved. Once approved, the message will be forwarded to everyone on the list.

Closed Moderated

If the sender of the message is a member of the RAMS list, their message will be held until a Moderator or Administrator approves them.

Messages from non-members will be rejected with an error message.

Primetime

Many lists have a Primetime setting. This setting controls when e-mails are allowed to be forwarded to a list. List Administrators do not control a list's Primetime setting but can request changes by e-mailing their campus Help Desk.

Any message sent to a list with a Primetime setting, once approved, is held until the Primetime window. Mail sent to a list during Primetime will be immediately delivered. Mail sent to a list outside it's Primetime hours will be held until the Primetime hours.

Class lists and certain announcement lists do not have a Primetime setting. A message sent to these lists will be delivered as soon as RAMS receives it.

Frequent RAMS Issues

Frequent RAMS Issues are addressed in the RAMS Troubleshooting Guide.
