Universal design: self-paced videos and live workshops

The Division for Continuing Studies (DoCS ) supports Rutgers academic units University-wide in teaching with technology, including creating and delivering hybrid and fully online courses. Among its other services, DoCS provides training workshops on accessibility and Universal Design issues. All of our workshops are available to attend virtually via GoToWebinar or in-person. We also have video-capture of previous sessions available, which you can watch at your own pace.

Accessibility and Universal Design – Text and Documents

This session will introduce you to the principles of accessible design and help you apply them to text documents, including PDFs. This session focuses on using headers and styles effectively, and on how to make accessible PDFs.

Accessibility and Universal Design – Images and Video

This session will introduce you to the principles of accessible design and help you apply them to images and video. This session focuses on how to add alt text and captions to images, and how to prepare a video for captioning.

Accessibility and Universal Design – Course Management

This session will introduce you to the principles of accessible design as they apply to course management. We will cover what information should be included in course documents, and how to structure your course consistently.

Accessibility and Universal Design – Math and Equations

This session will introduce you to MathML, and show you how to produce accessible math equations using the Math Editors in Canvas, eCollege, Sakai, and Blackboard. In addition, we will discuss LaTeX, how it can assist accessibility, and its accessibility limitations.

Live Training Workshops

Training available through DoCS is provided both online and online. The schedule and registration is available online, and summaries of the different trainings are listed below.

  1. Workshop: Creating Accessible Online Content: This workshop is designed to explore how to design courses and materials that are accessible to all students. We will cover the basics of online accessibility, focusing on best practices for creating accessible course materials such as text documents (Word/PDF), images, and videos with captions. We’ll also go over key accessibility features in the Canvas LMS.
  2. Workshop: Universal Design and Inclusive Teaching Strategies: This workshop will introduce you to the principles of inclusive teaching and Universal Design, frameworks which focus on designing learning spaces and experiences that meet the needs of diverse learners. You will leave this workshop with practical strategies, tips, and ideas to make your classroom a place where all students are welcomed and empowered to succeed.
