SUMMARY:Intro to Amarel Cluster (on-line)
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend the workshop at the bottom of this page. Zoom link will be emailed after filling out the registration form. \nAmarel account: Apply here as soon as possible. You must have an Amarel account set up before the workshop. \nVPN setup: You have to be connected on Rutgers’ network or be on VPN to access Amarel resources. \nExpected background: Some Linux experience or an “Intro to Linux” tutorial covering fundamental Linux skills (logging-in; using commands like cd\, ls\, cp\, rm; using a text editor). \nAdditional information: A laptop computer running Windows\, Mac OS X\, or Linux will be required to participate. Wireless campus network connectivity will also be required. Other mobile computing systems (e.g.\, tablets) will work if an SSH client is installed. \nSSH setup: Windows users must install an SSH client like PuTTY or MobaXterm. Alternatively\, Windows 10 users can install the complete Windows Subsystem for Linux. \nWorkshop content: This fast-paced 3-hour short course offers a brief introduction to using a Linux cluster. The goal is to help everyone make those first few steps toward productively using a Linux cluster for research — all members of the Rutgers community have free access to the Amarel Cluster. \nTopics: \n\nOARC\, the Amarel system\, our support and outreach resources\nHigh-level overview of research computing\, computing in parallel\, advanced networking\, and storage systems\nAccessing the cluster & basic organization (login node\, compute nodes\, storage spaces\, network connectivity)\nRemote access (VPN)\nUsing software modules\nOverview of running jobs with SLURM (serial\, parallel\, batch\, interactive)\nWriting a job script\nSubmitting jobs\nMonitoring job status\nRunning some example jobs\nCapturing and viewing job output/results\nConfiguring environment variables (editing your ~/.bashrc)\nBasics of compiling and installing your own software\nAvailability of Singularity for Singularity & Docker containers\nData exploration & data management resources available through the library\nUsing GUI-based applications with Open OnDemand\nTransferring files to & from Amarel\nReview of best practices\n\nIf you have questions or need help\, please email Bala Desinghu. \nRegister to attend the workshop: \n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.

SUMMARY:Intro to Linux Command Line (on-line)
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend this workshop at the bottom of this page. Zoom link will be emailed after filling out the registration form. \nAmarel account: Apply here as soon as possible. \nVPN setup: You have to be connected on Rutgers’ network or be on VPN to access Amarel resources. \nSSH setup: Windows users must install an SSH client like PuTTY or MobaXterm. Alternatively\, Windows 10 users can install the complete Windows Subsystem for Linux. \nWorkshop content: This 3-hour workshop offers a brief introduction to using the Linux operating system\, focusing on command-line operations. The primary objective is to provide beginner-level familiarity with using a Linux system for common research computing tasks. Linux systems (e.g.\, workstations\, remote servers\, computing clusters) can be thought of as the foundation of research computing. Being sufficiently comfortable with Linux command-line operations enables researchers to access tools or data that may be critical to progress in their computational work. \nTopics: \n\nOverview of Linux\nThe Bash shell\nCommands and syntax\nWorking with files and directories\nFilesystem permissions\nMoving files to/from remote systems\nUsing a text editor\nCustomizing your environment\nBasics of shell scripting\n\nExpected background: No previous experience with Linux is needed. However\, basic familiarity with managing your laptop may be needed to connect to the campus wireless network and possibly install software. \nAdditional information: A laptop computer running Windows\, Mac OS X\, or Linux will be required to participate. Wireless campus network connectivity will also be required. Other mobile computing systems (e.g.\, tablets) may work if an SSH client is installed. \n**NOTE** Just observing is welcome\, but to participate in hands-on activities\, you must have an Amarel account setup before the workshop. Please complete our web-based form at least 24 hr before the workshop (do this as soon as possible). \nIf you have questions or need help\, please email Bala Desinghu. \nRegister to attend the workshop: \n	Notice: JavaScript is required for this content.\nNo Fields Found.
