eduroam allows all Rutgers University students, faculty, and staff to take advantage of free and secure wireless service when visiting an eduroam (education roaming) member university, and allows visitors from member universities access when visiting Rutgers. Most Big 10 schools are participating members of the eduroam consortium. Also, many other universities, research centers, and libraries around the world are members.
The eduroam network is available at participating institutions in over 106 territories worldwide. A full list of participating institutions in the US can be found on the eduroam-US web page. To use eduroam, you will need a WiFi (802.11b/g/n) enabled device such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
- Before traveling to other eduroam-participating institutions, Rutgers University faculty, staff, and students must configure their device using the installer and connect to eduroam while at Rutgers.
- Afterward, at another institution you can select the eduroam wireless network on your device’s wireless connection settings and login using the following credentials:
- Username = NetID@rutgers.edu
- Password = NetID password
Tips
- Once you have used the installer to configure your device, you should be able to connect to wireless networks named "eduroam" at any participating institution. Before you leave Rutgers, please test that you have configured your device correctly by attempting to connect to the eduroam network while on the Rutgers campus with your NetID in the form of NetID@rutgers.edu and your NetID password.
- If you are having trouble configuring your device for eduroam or connecting to eduroam while traveling to another institution, please contact your local computing Help Desk. Please note the IT personnel at the institution you are visiting will not be able to assist you with authentication issues that may be preventing you from accessing eduroam.
Security reminders while traveling
- When visiting other institutions, members of the Rutgers community must follow the guidelines in the Rutgers Acceptable Use Policy.
- Use Rutgers VPN on your laptop, smartphone, or tablet to create an encrypted connection to University resources.
- Install antivirus software on your devices.
- Assume that any networks or devices other than your own are insecure. Remember that eduroam will never show a webpage asking for your username and/or password. This is a sign that someone is attempting to hijack your password – do not use any network that requests this information.
