Installation of Personal Antivirus Software


Please review the overview of antivirus software for University-owned equipment and personally owned equipment before installing antivirus software.

Note that for University-owned equipment, you should reach out to your Department’s IT staff before installing or uninstalling antivirus software.

Windows Defender

Follow Microsoft's guide on using the built-in security features and Windows Defender. 

Avira (For Mac)

For personal equipment that is not owned by Rutgers.

  1. Download Avira using the link on the Software Portal page
  2. Double click the downloaded file to begin installing.
  3. If a Security Window opens click Open to allow the installer to progress.
     
    A Security Window appears with an option to click 'Open' in order to proceed with the installer.

  4. Click Accept and Install.
  5. Enter your account information to allow the installation.
  6. The Avira installer will download the remaining components for installation and continue to install.
  7. If you receive a message "System Extension Blocked" click on Open Security Preferences.

    A message appears saying 'System Extension Blocked' with an option to click 'Open Security Preferences' to resolve the issue.

  8. Click Allow to approve the Avira Kernel extension to run.

    A prompt appears asking to 'Click Allow' to approve the Avira Kernel extension to run.

  9. The installation is now complete and you can close this window.
