Rutgers recommends free antivirus software for personal equipment not owned by Rutgers. For Windows computers, OIT advises the installation of Immunet in conjunction with the use of Windows Defender (a built-in anti-virus and malware suite provided by Microsoft). For Macintosh computers, OIT recommends Avira.

OIT also provides helpful resources for faculty, staff, and students to protect data on personal devices. Please visit the RUSecure website for more details.

Additionally, we recommend that everyone utilize safe browsing practices on the internet to avoid potentially installing a malicious program or virus.

In the event your machine is infected, you may be unable to access RUWireless or ResNet from your device. We recommend using Malwarebytes (in conjunction with Immunet for Windows machines) to remove the malicious software. In the event you are unable to remove the malicious software, we recommend contacting the OIT Help Desk for further assistance.

You’ll never be bothered to download detection updates to your computer. Each additional community member bolsters Immunet’s data analysis to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive protection. If one community member comes into contact with a virus or malware, Immunet will automatically add that protection to the rest of the community.
